In the maze of gray buildings, carpentry shops, Escher-like stairways and metal scaffolding behind my office, you?ll find a little luncheon restaurant tucked away. Well, actually, you probably won?t find it. You have to know exactly where it is, and even then, you still might wind up searching for it.

But let?s say you find it. It?s a modest place ? Mediterranean Restaurant is its name. There, a kindly couple dishes up beautifully prepared homestyle meals. Step up to the counter, where a tempting assortment of foods gaze back at you ? stuffed peppers, mafroum, meatballs of different shapes and sizes, kubbeh dumplings, mixed vegetables, roasted potatoes, and pasta. Yes, pasta. Among that wealth of handmade food is a simple pasta, yes, the kind that comes in a bag, cooked according to the package instructions and tossed with spices.

Given these options, who would order the pasta?

Well, that?s what I thought for years. Then one day, I don?t remember why, I ordered the pasta.

Suddenly, I understood what it was doing there. It was addictive, and I was hooked.

What makes a lunch counter pasta good enough to compete with a dozen handmade foods, all of which demand more care and preparation? In short, the spices. Tossed with a ruddy mix of Mediterranean spices ? the restaurant doesn?t get its name for nothing ? this is a prime example of simple pleasures.

Now, I?m back at work but I?m working from home, so I haven?t been at the office in quite a while. But either way, if I want to eat an embarrassingly large quantity of spicy pasta, best to do it in my own home, right?

So this is my best guess as to what goes into that dish. In place of the pasta, I use ptitim ? also known as Israeli couscous, or Ben-Gurion?s rice ? an Israeli creation that basically is, well, pasta. Little roasted nibs of pasta shaped like rice, or balls, or stars, or what-have-you. My favorite is the rice shape. It has a fun texture.

Thus, in the comfort of my own home, I?m free to skip over impressive stuffed vegetables and elegant dumplings and gorge myself on simple, spicy pasta/ptitim. No one will know.

For one 500-gram bag of ptitim:

• 1 onion, chopped
• 2 tablespoons oil
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 2 teaspoons paprika
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 teaspoon turmeric
• 4 cups water

In a pot, fry the onion in the oil on a medium flame. Add the ptitim, stir and let brown lightly. Add the spices and the water, cover, and bring to a boil. Let simmer until the water is fully absorbed, let sit for a minute or two with the flame off, and fluff before eating.

The host city of the upcoming Olympic Games continues to embrace "All Eyes on Korea", the 100-day Korean culture summer festival, bringing together an unprecedented scope of cultural events, exhibitions, and lectures that encompass the traditional and modern sides of Korea.

Marking the recent opening of two exhibitions held as part of "All Eyes on Korea", Kim Ock Rang, Director of Kokdu Museum, and Ralph Rugoff, Director of Hayward Gallery, took over the podium at the Korean Cultural Center UK (KCCUK) to deliver their own insights with special reference to the participating artists and artifacts on display.

Kokdu meets the world in London: discovering masterful funerary figures and artisan spirit

Beginning on July 11, the KCCUK presents an unconventional exhibition showcasing traditional funeral biers alongside intricately carved wooden figures. "Funerary Figures: Companions for the Journey to the Other World" not only welcomes viewers to find out about funeral rites but also reveals a great deal about how traditional Korean communal society embraced death and the notion of the afterlife.

The colorful funerary figurines also known as kokdu take various forms of humans, animals, or supernatural beings like dragons or phoenixes and were used to decorate the funeral bier, keeping the deceased company and take care of his or her journey to the other world. The historic artifacts on display at the KCCUK were carefully selected from nearly 20,000 pieces of Kokdu Museum's collection.

Marking the opening on July 11, Kim Ock Rang gave a special lecture, talking about her affection towards the funerary figurines along with her life story and three decades of art management.

"I have never seen such a concise, systematic, shapely curated exhibition featuring a Korean funerary bier since I went to the National Folk Museum of Korea during my visit to Korea", said Jan Stuart, keeper of the Asian Department of the British Museum, at the opening ceremony. "We would like to plan a special exhibition inside the British Museum in the future".

Weeks after the joyful outdoor installations by artist Choi Jeong-hwa were unveiled at the Southbank Centre to embellish the grey multi-level architecture, a witty set of artwork by Kim Beom is taking over the Hayward Gallery Project Space on July 17, for the second half of the summer. "The School of Inversion", Kim's first solo exhibition in Britain, explores the subjects of school and learning featuring the artist's humorously executed mixed media installations, sections of drawings, and video.

Kim, who has meticulously transformed some of the most banal objects into "curated" artistic creations, stretches the conventional perception and limits of reality by referencing social awareness, which is often challenged by the artist's imagination and subconscious creativity.

Audiences will soon be inspired by the artist's objects and images elaborated around the themes of existence and misidentification, reality and manipulation, among others. The artist invites viewers to become actively engaged in the multi-layered projection of images and thoughts, implicitly conveying continued reflection on Korean society with a sense of humor.

"Korean artists have excellent tastes of design", remarked Ralph Rugoff, Director of the Hayward Gallery, while recognizing Korean artists' incredible attention to detail and refined designs during a session of the Global Korea Lectures at the KCCUK on July 13.

The veteran expert in contemporary art gave his own perspectives on contemporary Korean art, while introducing artists who participated in the 100-day "All Eyes on Korea" event, including Choi Jeong-hwa, Kim Beom, and Lee Bul, accompanied with detailed narration on their oeuvre.

Also on view from July 23 is a new public art commission, "Written in Soap: A Plinth Project" by Korean artist Meekyoung Shin (Shin Meekyoung). Shin, who showcased a solo exhibition at Haunch of Venison, is relatively well-known in the London art scene for her iconic reinterpretation of Eastern and Western historic relics with soap. This time, she has brought the equestrian statue back in Cavendish Square in central London for the first time in 144 years. The sculpture installation rendered in a seemingly fragile material will last for one year, weathering in the wind and rain and expressing a sense of dislocation and transformation.

Fall Sports Registration Going on NOW! | Sumter?In the Middle of ...

Yesterday afternoon, I found myself conducting a rather unexpected group bus tour of our community.? Of course, the downtown area, the shopping district and many other places were bustling with activity.? But it was slightly strange to drive into our top-flight sports facilities and see them looking like ghost towns.? After all, it doesn?t take a whole lot of imagination to hear the pop of tennis balls, the crack of a wooden bat or the cheering crowds at a hot soccer match, because those are sights and sounds that Sumter is well accustomed to.? Our fields and courts are almost always filled?just try and get down Theatre Drive past Bobby Richardson Park and the Palmetto Tennis Center on a weekend!

With the summer beginning to wind down (calendar-wise, definitely not temperature-wise!), it is time for all of that to change.? Fall sports registration is almost here!? The Sumter County Recreation Department?opened the doors for youth football, cheerleading, baseball, softball and soccer youth registration, along with adult softball, this month.? Registration continues through August 16, with baseball and softball registration going until August 23.?

The Recreation Department also offers a variety of activities for all ages year-round, including karate, shagging, clogging and more.? CHICAGO (AP) ? The man convicted of gunning down the mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew of Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday.

Hudson, who attended every day of William Balfour's trial earlier this year, sat next to her sister at the hearing and at one point dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

The sentencing hearing came a little more than two months after a jury convicted Balfour in the Oct. 24, 2008, shooting deaths of Hudson's 57-year-old mother Darnell Donerson, her 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson and her 7-year-old nephew Julian King. The judge sentenced Balfour to three terms of life in prison plus 120 years on other charges.

"You have the heart of an arctic night," Cook County Circuit Judge Charles Burns told Balfour. "Your soul is as barren as dark space."

Prosecutors portrayed Balfour, who was married to Hudson's sister Julia Hudson, as a jealous estranged husband who often stalked Julia Hudson's house after he moved out in early 2008. But Balfour's attorneys suggested that someone else committed a crime in the family's three-story house in Englewood on Chicago's South Side.

Balfour faced a mandatory life sentence. Illinois does not have the death penalty.

The only person to give a victim impact statement in court was Gregory King, the father of Hudson's nephew. He told the judge he felt like his heart was ripped out when he found out his son, Julian King, was dead.

"I miss picking Julian up from the school bus," King said. "I miss going on field trips with him ... I miss him spending the night with me and my other children."

Balfour gave a brief statement, offering his condolences to the Hudson family while maintaining his innocence.

"My deepest prayers goes out to Julian King," Balfour said. "I loved him. I still love him. I'm innocent your honor."

Before the sentencing, Burns denied a request for a new trial from Balfour's defense.
