HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? A young man whose sexual-abuse claims triggered the investigation of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky says in a new book Sandusky's wife once called down to the basement while he was being attacked and Sandusky told her he was busy.

Aaron Fisher writes in "Silent No More" that Dottie Sandusky asked her husband to fix a table upstairs. He says Jerry Sandusky told her he was fixing an air hockey table and she dropped the subject.

The Associated Press bought an early copy of the book, being published next week.

Dottie Sandusky maintains she never saw her husband behave inappropriately with children.

Fisher was described in court records as Victim 1. He's speaking out on television Friday.

Jerry Sandusky was convicted in June of abusing 10 boys, including Fisher. He says he's innocent.

EU lawmaker tells accounting industry to prepare for change

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Accounting firms will have to change how they check the books of companies in the European Union even if a British anti-trust probe of the sector finds little wrong, a senior EU lawmaker said.

EU member states and the EU Parliament are scrutinizing a draft EU law that proposes far-reaching changes to improve information for investors and increase auditor choice in a sector dominated by just four companies globally.

Sajjad Karim, the British center-right lawmaker steering the law through parliament, said on Thursday this week's announcement of a two-month delay to January of initial findings from a UK Competition Commission probe into the audit market would hold him back.

"We had hoped for some level of insight into what they are doing but we are going to carry on," Karim told Reuters.

The so-called Big Four accounting firms which audit nearly all top companies - KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers - hope the British probe won't come up with radical "remedies".

The four say that would make it harder for the EU to justify any sweeping changes but Karim said the bloc would push ahead and introduce reform regardless.

There was consensus among the lawmakers that changes to the industry's practices were needed and the question was simply how far such changes should go, Karim said.

"Maintaining the status quo is not something I would want to see. That is not something that I will allow to happen," he said.

The lawmakers and member states have faced heavy lobbying from an industry split between the Big Four, wanting minimal structural changes, and smaller firms like BDO, Mazars and Grant Thornton, that see a rare opportunity for intervention to help them break into the blue chip market.

Karim needs a broad cross-party agreement on the draft law to give him a strong hand in negotiations on a final text with EU states.

He has signaled he wants key elements of the draft to be watered down but will have to reach a compromise with the parliament's two biggest parties, which can override him.

Karim said there was no consensus yet on whether companies should be forced to "rotate" or switch auditors, and if so, what should be the frequency.

Lawmakers are also discussing whether to insert a new element into the draft - joint audits, whereby companies have to have two auditors so that smaller accountancy firms can build up experience with major clients.

A final deal with EU states is expected in early 2013 and Karim would like to give the industry until 2014 to get ready.

Parliament's legal affairs committee will debate the amendments to the draft law on November 7 with a vote in December, allowing for joint talks with member states to start in January.

Britain, a major global base for auditors, is among the member states opposing major structural changes to the audit sector but may not have enough support to weaken key elements.

That CRM tool you thought was going to help you make more sales has only become an albatross around your neck that you avoid. The accounting system which becomes laborious rather than helpful is something you steer clear of each week.

The tragic part is missing the point altogether and looking for the next shiny tool to deliver salvation. You may have an overly complicated tool, but ultimately, how you use the business systems you have will be the determinant of your success. Look over your tools and assess them as follows:

• Are they helpful??If they are no longer being used or attractive as they once were, then make the hard decision. You may feel emotionally vested, but move on to something else that will be useful. If you are going to have tools, they should have a high utility rate. This goes for your cloud computing software, iPhone or Android Apps and any desktop applications.
• Do you enjoy using it??There are plenty of elegant tools today that were not built around a programmer or IT view of the world. I dislike software which is merely a skin over some antiquated database. There needs to be a flow and elegance. Emotional connection helps with usability. I find that I am more motivated with systems that are elegant in their design. Attractiveness does matter in the daily grind.
• Is there a measurable return??If you are merely putting in data without getting real value in terms of revenue, decision-making or relationships, then consider discarding your tool. Clear the decks. Use things that help you get further. Anything that sits around takes up mind space and compromises focus. This can go for your social media choices as well as your choice of business systems.

I find that a lot of the hindrances to business success is the noise of choices. Just because you can access any software you want easily doesn?t mean it has a place in your business. Take a quick audit and get rid of what is no longer working. Move to things that are simpler, easier and delightful. You will be surprised how much more attractive getting things done becomes.

Presidential Debate On Education: Will Obama Press Romney On Education Differences?

NEW YORK -- Michelle Rhee, the former chancellor of Washington, D.C. public schools, is frustrated. During the first presidential debate two weeks ago, she said she was pleased to see education mentioned a few times. But it stopped there.

"There were a couple comments about education over the course of the evening but both candidates stayed at a very high level in terms of their talking points," Rhee told The Huffington Post. "I want to see more substance."

Approaching the second presidential debate Tuesday night, some advocates have sought to make education a focal point of the election. But with little airtime devoted to the issue, it has stayed mostly on the sidelines. Education is seen primarily as a topic of local concern, and several years' worth of PDK/Gallup polls show that Americans view their local schools and the broader issue of American education as fundamentally different. Advocates say it's because the public hasn't yet connected the dots between the quality of the country?s schools and the economy.

That's why, despite her disappointment, Rhee says she wasn?t surprised by the absence of a spotlight on education in the current election cycle. "It's a disconnect because people see education as a social issue. Social issues tend to get pushed aside or cut," Rhee said. "People have to understand that we are not going to regain our position in the global marketplace, our economic standing again [without better schools.]"

During the first debate, education came up briefly, mostly in the context of funding and the Obama administration's Race to the Top competition. But neither GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney nor President Obama clarified his stance on schools.

Romney's education platform lacks specific policy details -- it is unclear, for example, how Romney's voucher-like program to provide all students the chance to attend private schools would work. And Romney's education plans tend to change based on the situation. On the other hand, Obama has made his education record a prominent component of stump speeches and campaign advertisements, while making few campaign promises on the topic. During his first term, Obama has vacillated between appeasing two key constituents: teachers unions and the so-called "education reform" movement. It is unclear which side Obama would favor without the pressure of an upcoming election.

Going into the second debate, Rhee wants to hear "more specifics about the policies" and "more detailed follow-up questions." She noted that the two candidates are similar on specific education policies, but differ on the role the federal government should play in education.

The overall lack of pushback on the candidates' education platforms gives them room to change their positions. During the course of his candidacy, Romney has wavered on where exactly he stands on spending federal money to hire more teachers. The Republican presidential candidate mocked Obama in June for proposing the hiring of more public sector employees, stating:

[Obama] wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more firemen, more policemen, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It's time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.

Days later, after his opponents quickly seized upon those comments, Romney attempted to walk them back, calling accusations that he would be opposed to hiring more teachers "completely absurd."

When the first debate raised the topic of education, Romney again presented himself as a fan of hiring more teachers. "Well, first, I love great schools. ? And the key to great schools, great teachers," Romney said. "So I reject the idea that I don?t believe in great teachers or more teachers. Every school district, every state should make that decision on their own." He also promised not to cut education funding and stated his fondness for Big Bird, the ubiquitous yellow bird of the PBS show "Sesame Street" and symbol of children's education programming.

In what may be seen as an example of the lack of substantive discussion on education policy, the mention became the subject of several exchanges between the Romney and Obama camps, with the media and the Obama campaign in particular citing Romney's openness to cutting public broadcasting funds -- and Big Bird -- as emblematic of his true, broader position on education.

But in an interview with the Des Moines Register, the GOP nominee took a different tone, once again suggesting that the president's idea to hire more teachers is misguided and would not result in economic growth:

He wants to hire more school teachers. We all like school teachers. It?s a wonderful thing. Typically, school teachers are hired by states and localities, not by the federal government. But hiring school teachers is not going to raise the growth of the U.S. economy over the next three-to-four years.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers union, said Romney's varied remarks lead to confusion. "Which Romney will show up at this debate?" she asked. "The Romney who said I'm not going to cut education, or the Romney who said I'm going to cut education by 40 percent?"

For the president, the need to invest in education -- from hiring more teachers to making college more affordable -- has been a staple of his messaging since he began crisscrossing the country in the pursuit of his reelection. And for that very reason, his campaign found an immediate window to attack Romney on education after the appointment of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to the Republican presidential ticket.

The Wisconsin congressman is synonymous with his controversial budget plan -- which called for 20 percent cuts to domestic discretionary spending, including funding for Pell Grants. And while Romney quickly moved to distance himself from his running mate?s budget plan -- despite embracing it earlier -- Obama hasn?t shied away from associating his opponent with the Republican vice presidential nominee?s proposed cuts to education.

Vice President Joe Biden deliberately raised the education funding issue during the vice presidential debate last week, trying to force Ryan to answer for those aspects of his budget. But because the subject did not come up until the end of the debate, it was mostly glossed over, enabling Ryan to skirt around a definitive response as to where a Romney-Ryan administration would stand on funding.

The Romney campaign has reiterated its candidate's pledge to not cut education spending -- a move that has forced Obama advisors to stop painting Romney's education vision as one that takes a hatchet to education. Instead, the Obama campaign has taken to contrasting Obama's investments in education with Romney's opposition to increasing spending.

"I expect as long as the opportunities present themselves, and [as long as] he can find a way to create those opportunities, you'll see a continued focus on education in the next debate," Jon Schnur, who has been advising Obama on education since 2008, told The Huffington Post. While education-centric campaign advertisements have focused more on Obama's record instead of his campaign promises, Schnur said that in a second term, Obama would seek to implement proposals that have floundered up until now -- like a Race to the Top competition for higher education, as the president mentioned in the State of the Union but which has failed to receive any congressional funding.

Phil Handy, a Romney education advisor, said in a Monday debate with Schnur that it is possible to "hold public education harmless" -- protect education funding from cuts -- while still reducing the deficit.

Handy said he's not holding his breath for an education mention tonight. "It's a town hall meeting, it's hard to prepare," he said. "In the first debate, there was more discussion of education than we expected." Handy said that Romney "gets" education, and that he has pushed the candidate to stress it more, arguing that the issue polls high among Latino and female voters -- constituencies that Romney has struggled with and needs in order to improve his chances of winning on Nov. 6.

As education insiders keep their eyes on tonight's debate, Obama will likely force the issue, at least when it comes to his talking points and pressing his opponent on the critical issue of school funding. And though Romney's pledge in the last debate to not cut education dollars won the applause of advocates, it was Big Bird who stole the spotlight. For both candidates, the absence of a robust conversation about specific education policies in the 2012 race is likely to persist in Tuesday's night's debate and on to the polls.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The night busted open in New York City as Bruce Springsteen and other Rock and Roll Hall of Famers helped Steven Van Zandt celebrate his Big Man of the Year award.

Darlene Love, Elvis Costello and Dion were among the stellar performers Tuesday night at a rollicking benefit for Little Kids Rock, an initiative that rescues music education amid public school budget cuts.

Springsteen had some fun while presenting the award ? gleefully detailing their roommate days and Van Zandt's lack of housekeeping skills.

"What a liar," Van Zandt retorted with a grin.

Amid the musical blowout, Van Zandt and the other stars discussed the arts' role in fueling young minds and shaping character ? tasks accomplished through the thousands of musical instruments and the lessons made possible by Little Kids Rock.

Costello, before going onstage, waxed eloquently on the "mundane and magical" aspects of music, and its transformative effects.

Van Zandt said in an AP interview before the show that children might see a musical career as glamorous and fun ? "and it is."

But it also "requires a lot of work, just like any other craft. ... You need discipline and you need willpower and focus. And ...a lot of hours put into it," he said.

So people might be surprised to know that Van Zandt, while concentrating on a multitude of parallel careers, can go three years without playing a guitar, and then pick it up again in a week or two.

"When you've been playing so long, you don't really forget how to play," he said.

"Well, that's not a good example for the kids, though," he conceded, laughing. "That's just me. ... 'You kids: Don't do what I do ? do what I say.'"

The charity named the award for E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons in 2009, two years before he died.

Clemons' nephew, Jake, who now tours with the E Street Band playing saxophone, lent heartfelt accompaniment to Little Kids Rock musicians from Franklin L. Williams Middle School in Jersey City, N.J.

Singer-guitarist Tom Morello, serving a blistering homage to Van Zandt's old anti-apartheid song, "Sun City," told the crowd how it helped stoke his own activism as a student at Harvard University.

Some bad-boy appeal came when rocker Jesse Malin climbed onto a table of people dining near the stage, singing as he traipsed in sneakers amid stemware on the tablecloth.

Besides working with Bruce Springsteen and E Street, and camping it up in mobster roles ? his most recent on the Netflix show "Lilyhammer" ? Van Zandt works as a record and television producer, radio host, songwriter and arranger, and oversees two satellite channels.

The self-educated music historian is also chairman of the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, which is developing curriculum for schools. Not bad for a guy who endured his own school days as a self-described "freak," ''misfit" and "outcast."

"That was particular to my generation," he said. Now, being a musician is "acceptable. ... But it wasn't so respectable in the 60s."

In the long run, though, Van Zandt said music saved his life ? and he wants to return the favor. "It's why I support Little Kids Rock."

Denver Global Products to Create 450 Jobs in Lincoln County

DENVER, N.C.-- Gov. Bev Perdue announced today that Denver Global Products, Inc., a subsidiary of Chongqing RATO Power Company Ltd., will establish its manufacturing, distribution and R & D facilities in Lincoln County.? The project was made possible in part by a Job Development Investment Grant. To meet the targets established in this performance-based grant, the company plans to create 450 jobs over four years and make a capital investment of $30.2 million in Lincoln County.

?North Carolina continues to be a top choice for companies looking to establish advanced manufacturing as well as research and development facilities,? Gov. Perdue said.? ?This proves how important our investment in education and infrastructure is, and that it?s resulting in good jobs for North Carolinians.?

Denver Global concentrates on innovating solutions for consumer products. The manufacturing facility will produce DGP developed products as well as RATO products. Incorporated in North Carolina in 2010, Denver Global was acquired by Chongqing RATO Power in January. The company currently employs 27 people at its Lincoln County location.

Based in Chongqing, China, RATO manufactures and distributes thermo-power products and general-purpose engines for all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, water pumps and generators. The new Denver Global campus in Lincoln County will accommodate the company?s administrative sales, manufacturing, distribution, and research and development operations.

?Denver Global greatly appreciates all the support the company has received from Gov. Perdue, the State of North Carolina and Lincoln County. Many of us live in Lincoln County, we started our company in Lincoln County and we are all pleased with the opportunity to continue to grow our business from our base here,? stated Denver Global Products CEO, Roger Leon.

While individual wages for the 450 jobs will vary by job function, the average annual payroll for the new jobs will be more than $13.4 million.

?This is a huge announcement and shows manufacturing is alive and well in Lincoln County,? said Rep. Jason Saine. ?Denver Global Products will be a great addition to our community and I know they will thrive here with our skilled workforce.?

The state Economic Investment Committee today voted to award a Job Development Investment Grant to Denver Global Products. JDIGs are awarded only to new and expanding businesses and industrial projects whose benefits exceed the costs to the state and which would not be undertaken in North Carolina without the grant.

Under the terms of the JDIG, the company is eligible to receive a grant equal to 60 percent of the state personal income withholding taxes derived from the creation of new jobs for each of the ten years in which the company meets annual performance targets. If Denver Global meets the targets called for under the agreement, the JDIG could yield $2.7 million in maximum benefits for the company.

In addition, up to $916,000 could be added to the state?s Utility Fund for infrastructure improvements in economically distressed counties. When a JDIG is awarded in the state?s more economically prosperous counties such as Lincoln, 25 percent of the grant is allocated to the Utility Fund to encourage economic development in less prosperous counties.

Other partners that assisted with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges, Lincoln County, Lincoln Economic Development Association and the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center.

Through Gov. Perdue?s JobsNOW initiative, the state continues to work aggressively to create well-paying jobs, train and retrain its workforce, and lay the foundation for a strong and sustainable economic future.

Fewer qualms for gun-rights groups over Romney now

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ? Gun-rights groups perceive President Barack Obama as a threat to unfettered access to firearms. They once had qualms about Mitt Romney, too.

But times and circumstances have changed for Romney, the GOP presidential nominee now in tune with the National Rifle Association and similar organizations, whose members are motivated voters.

In the tight White House race, every bit of support helps, especially in the most closely contested states and particularly from groups that claim millions of members nationwide.

Romney's prior embrace of weapon-control proposals had put him crossways with the NRA and others. These days, Romney is on their good side by opposing renewal of a federal ban on semiautomatic weapons, additional regulations on gun shows and suggested federal gun registration requirements.

The NRA and some less prominent organizations are spending big money on mailings, radio ads, TV commercials and booths at game fairs to promote the former Massachusetts governor and portray Obama as hostile to gun rights.

Gun groups are an important part of an outdoor enthusiast network that neither side is willing to concede.

There are "Sportsmen for Romney" and "Sportsmen for Obama," all playing to the largely male hook-and-bullet crowd that is protective of recreational passions. Neither candidate is considered an avid outdoorsman, though each has made mention of fishing rods or been photographed casting a line.

Romney and his allies underscore his hands-off stance when it comes to guns, and say he would move to open more public land to hunting. They also promote the bona fides of running mate Paul Ryan, who has a permit for just about every season in Wisconsin, his home state.

Last month, Ryan reminded a gathering of sportsmen in Ohio of the hours he has logged in duck blinds, deer stands, pheasant fields and fishing boats. Then came his critique of Obama: "I wonder, I shudder as a gun owner, seeing his record when he was in the Illinois state Senate, what would he do if he never has to face the voters ever again?"

It's the type of message that resonates with voters such as Stan Glover of Bowerston, Ohio. Glover said Romney's past stands gave him pause, but he's more nervous about Obama.

"The uncertainty of politics in Washington, as regards hunters/gun owner rights, has caused undue fear amongst folks that enjoy the shooting sports," said Glover, a manufacturing plant sales director who plans to vote for Romney.

The Obama campaign emphasizes steps by his administration to promote habitat conservation, set aside land and preserve access to land used for recreation. Supporters point to Obama's "American Great Outdoors Initiative" to coordinate conservation and natural resource efforts in all 50 states, whether it's restoring wetlands in Iowa's duck-rich Prairie Pothole Region or filtering phosphorous harmful to fish and fowl in Grand Lake St. Marys in Ohio.

For Obama, minimizing Romney's apparent advantage among voters who place a premium on outdoors issues is the name of the game.

In Iowa and other states, that task falls to people such as Dick Dearden. He's a Democratic state senator and leader of a group of pro-Obama outdoors enthusiasts working to combat negative portrayals of the incumbent among the shotgun crowd.

"The president is not a threat to people who hunt and fish. He's an asset," Dearden said. "I'm a member of the NRA and they are beginning to more and more embarrass me. I'm a Second Amendment person, but I have not seen anything this president has done for the last four years that has hurt anyone's Second Amendment rights."

Obama's campaign highlights a law he signed in his first year as president that allows people with weapons permits to bring loaded guns into national parks and wildlife refuges. The change drew rebukes from gun-control advocates.

But groups working to defeat Obama sound alarms about his support of reinstating an assault weapons ban if one made it through Congress. They also are stoking fears that the president would use a second term to appoint federal judges with restrictive views toward gun ownership. The Supreme Court has been closely divided in recent gun cases, and the balance could shift if Obama had the chance to pick any new justices.

Romney told the leader of the NRA's lobbying arm in a question-and-answer piece published last month that he would appoint "wise, experienced and restrained judges" and fill his Cabinet with "people who agree that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental, individual right."

His own views have evolved from when he ran for the Senate and was governor in Massachusetts. In his failed 1994 Senate campaign he backed a waiting period on gun sales and an assault weapons ban that he said were "not going to make me the hero of the NRA." As governor, he signed a state-level assault weapons ban that he argued was part of a brokered deal between the sides in the gun debate.

In the NRA interview published in September, Romney unequivocally opposed new gun restrictions, including one on semiautomatic weapons. "I do not support any additional laws to restrict the right to keep and bear arms," he said. The group endorsed him in Virginia in early October and has since reserved more than $1.3 million in TV ad time in in Florida, Ohio, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, acknowledged some hesitancy about Romney but said gun-rights activists were mollified by his selection of Ryan as a running mate.

"It created a lot more willingness to pull his lever, and at least some enthusiasm," Pratt said. "Ryan is at least one of us."

Obama, Romney hunker down for debate prep

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney are each forgoing time on the campaign trail Sunday in favor of hours of intense debate preparation ahead of their next face-to-face meeting.

Obama, seeking to rebound from a widely panned performance at the first debate, was huddling with advisers at a sprawling riverfront resort in Williamsburg, Va. Romney retreated to his Boston-area home, where the Republican nominee was working to replicate his commanding turn on the debate stage.

The days devoted to debate preparations underscore just how important the next face-off, which falls exactly three weeks from Election Day, is to both campaigns. Millions of Americans are already casting their ballots through early voting, meaning there are few opportunities to recover from slip-ups in what remains an exceedingly close race.

Following a listless first debate, Obama was working with aides on more pointed and aggressive responses to Romney. The campaign's game plan is also to target Romney for what it sees as a willingness to shift his positions to make them more palatable for voters.

"Governor Romney has been making pitches all of his life," Obama spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said of the businessman-turned Republican nominee.

"He knows how to say what people want to hear whether that was during his time at Bain or during the dozens of town halls he did during the primary," she added, referring to the private equity fund Romney used to run.

While Romney prepped for the debate, his campaign released a new television advertisement using footage of Republican running mate Paul Ryan's debate this week with Vice President Joe Biden. The ad, titled "Fiscal Discipline", features clips of Ryan saying the government "can't keep spending money we don't have." His comments are juxtaposed with video from the debate of Biden laughing.

The campaign did not say in which states the ad would run.

Ryan and Biden were each cheered by their party's base after their debate. But the focus shifts back to Obama and Romney on Tuesday at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

Obama aides have tried to make debate preparations a higher priority for the president this time around. Ahead of first debate, some of Obama's practice sessions were cut short, and others canceled all together, mainly because of developments in Libya, where four Americans were killed at a U.S. consulate.

Aides say Obama is still dealing with those matters and others. But the urgency that led to interruptions during earlier debate prep has subsided, and the campaign is trying to ensure that Obama stays more fully engaged in his practice sessions.

Despite questions about the effectiveness of his debate preparation, Obama is working with the same team this time around. Senior advisers David Axelrod and David Plouffe, along with former White House officials Anita Dunn and Ron Klain, are still running the preparations. Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes has also been added to the team because the second and third debates involve foreign policy.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., is playing the role of Romney.

Among the campaign's chief priorities during the practice sessions is sharpening the president's retorts to Romney and drawing a sharper contrast between what the campaign says are Romney's shifting positions on key issues.

The president may have picked up a few pointers from Biden.

Obama watched that debate with aides in a conference room on Air Force One as he traveled back to Washington. The president said little throughout the debate, but did chime in when Biden would deliver a particularly pointed counter to Ryan.

"That's a good one," Obama said, according to aides.

Romney returned to Massachusetts Saturday night, planning to spend most of two days at his Belmont home getting ready for the upcoming debate.

With Romney is Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, who's playing President Barack Obama in mock debates. Playing moderator Candy Crowley is Peter Flaherty, a longtime Romney aide.

Romney typically attends church on Sunday mornings at the chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near his house. He planned to spend Sunday afternoon at a nearby hotel.

Romney spent most of the past week campaigning in Ohio, a state critical to his presidential hopes.

AllThingsD, which is traditionally very close to Apple, says the iPad Mini announcement will happen October 23. Consider that date set in stone.?

But even more interesting is that Apple will unveil its new tablet just three days before Microsoft launches its first tablet, the Surface.?

Microsoft announced the Surface in June, but it left pricing and release date a mystery. We're now just two weeks away from the Surface launch and we still don't even know where it'll be sold. (Aside from the popup stores Microsoft will have in select cities on October 26.)

So there's a very strong chance Apple will be able announce pricing and availability for the iPad Mini before Microsoft can even set pricing for a tablet it announced about four months ago. That's going to make Microsoft look pretty silly.

It's the same pattern we see with just about every hardware company besides Apple and Amazon. There's a big, flashy event for an unfinished product that will launch on an unspecified date for an unspecified price. Of course, companies don't?have to announce those details, but it's confusing to consumers who are trying to figure out what to buy. Why wait months for an unfinished product like the Surface when you already know what you're getting with excellent tablets like the iPad and Nexus 7??

The timing of the iPad Mini announcement couldn't be better for Apple. This thing is going to sell like crazy and completely overshadow Microsoft's Surface launch a few days later.

In the bacterial world of your mouth, nurture wins out over nature

The human mouth is home to a teeming community of microbes, yet still relatively little is known about what determines the specific types of microorganisms that live there. Is it your genes that decide who lives in the microbial village, or is it your environment? In a study published online in Genome Research (www.genome.org), researchers have shown that environment plays a much larger role in determining oral microbiota than expected, a finding that sheds new light on a major factor in oral health.

Our oral microbiome begins to take shape as soon as we are born and sees a myriad of bacteria introduced to our mouth during childhood and later in life, yet little is known about whether nature (your genes) or nurture (your environment) has a stronger influence. Because of variations in the oral microbiome in both health and diseases like bacteremia and endocarditis, understanding the determinants of oral microbiota communities might lead to better prevention and treatment strategies.

In this study, a team of researchers from the University of Colorado sequenced the microbial DNA present in the saliva samples of a cohort of twins, and matched the DNA sequences in a database to determine which types of bacteria were present in each individual. In their data set, they utilized samples that were gathered over a decade of adolescence from the same individuals to observe how the salivary microbiome changes with time.

By comparing the salivary microbiomes of identical twins, who share the same genetic make-up and live in a common environment, the group found that their salivary microbiomes were not significantly more similar than the salivary microbiota of fraternal twins, who share only half of their genes, suggesting genetic relatedness is not as important as environment. "The conclusion that genetic relatedness plays at most only a small role in microbial relatedness was really a surprise," said Dr. Ken Krauter, senior author of the study.

"We were also intrigued to see that the microbiota of twin pairs becomes less similar once they moved apart from each other," added Simone Stahringer, first author of the study, explaining further evidence for the influence of environment on oral microbiota. Interestingly, in the samples obtained from the same individuals over time, they found that the salivary microbiome changed the most during early adolescence, between the ages of 12 and 17. This suggests that factors such as puberty or prominent behavioral changes at this age might be important.

Krauter explained that their work uncovered another unexpected finding, that there is a core community of bacteria that are present in nearly all humans studied. "Though there are definitely differences among different people, there is a relatively high degree of sharing similar microbial species in all human mouths."

The authors suggested that this report has established a framework for future studies of the factors that influence oral microbial communities. "With broad knowledge of the organisms to expect to find in mouths," said Krauter, "we can now better understand how oral hygiene, environmental exposure to substances like alcohol, methamphetamines and even foods we eat affect the balance of microbes."

Stick to the 3-B Plan when Emailing Busy People [Communication]

If you want to get in touch with influential people (aka: BUSY people), you need to know how to contact them. Despite the buzz around social media, far more people use email to communicate than any other online medium, and business today still gets done over email, not through tweets. Sparring Mind's Gregory Ciotti explains how to make things happen over email with the 3-B Plan.

Why it's Important to Know

Knowing how to write outreach emails might seem like a no-brainer or maybe even an unnecessary skill to have, but I can assure you the opposite, on both accounts. If you're serious about networking and building your platform/personal brand, you MUST know how to email important people. Important people are busy people. You can't rely on random encounters to get in touch with people who can help you flourish; while it may happen once in a while, the rest of the time it's up to you.

Due to the fact that tweeting is so impersonal and a cold phone call is so annoying, email is the ideal platform for reaching out. For busy people, even their inbox is something that is viewed as a "task," meaning they want to get in and out as quickly as possible. Understanding how to properly email people is a skill that sets you apart from others (trust me, I've received some truly awful emails) and is essential for making things happen with influencers.

The 3-B Plan

When deciding whether to read or delete an email, our brains go through this common evaluation process:

1. Who is emailing me (and is this spam)?
2. What do they want?
3. How long will this take?

Getting a "pass" on all 3 of these can be tougher than it looks, especially for busy people. Here's my 3-step technique to avoid the trash bin.

I call it the 3-B plan. I always double-check my emails to make sure they follow the guidelines below, and I've been able to get some fantastic response rates.

Brevity

If there is one thing that busy people value above all else, it's brevity. If you were receiving upwards of 50-100 emails per day, or had so many obligations that you were only left with a short amount of time to check email, it'd be easy to see why. In order to get your messages read ASAP, it's best to make sure your opening email follows the ASAP rule: as short as possible.

I wouldn't put a set limit on email length, because it's a case by case basis. The important thing to remember is to always edit your emails at least once to trim unnecessary information. People don't need your enthralling life story over email, they just need "who, what, why" so they can get back to business.

Blunt

Being blunt doesn't mean not being persuasive, it simply means getting to the point without trying to be clever. Stories and jokes are essential for other forms of writing, but NOT for emails. Get to the incentive on why the other person should respond right away.

If possible, list a number in the title to signal commitment time (Ex: "3 quick questions") and state exactly what the email is about in the subject line.

Basic

I sometimes am in disbelief that this one needs to be said, but it's so true. I've had emails where people send what looks like a newsletter, emails with tons of images in them (so I have to click "display images" to even read it), and emails with a DOZEN attachments. When it's your first time emailing someone...
