WDA Singapore: Self-Improvement Leads to Workplace Success

Over the past 17 years, April Wong has accumulated a wealth of experience in the human resource field in both the public and private sectors. Currently with the National Council of Social Service, she was transferred to handle the challenging portfolio of Talent Management in the newly formed Manpower Capability Development Department, which entails developing a pipeline of future leaders in the social service sector.

Picking up Practical HR Skills

To prepare for the transfer, April enrolled herself in the WSQ Specialist Diploma in Human Capital Management (HR Development) at Human Capital Singapore Pte Ltd (HCS) to gain more knowledge of Talent Management.

Over five intense months of fortnightly evening classes (five times a week including Saturdays and Sundays), April picked up practical skills such as talent management, managing organisational risks, applying financial knowledge in a HR environment and leading organisational design. Reflecting on her course experience, April said, ?The programme allowed me to enrich my knowledge of human resource, particularly in the area of talent management. It helped me understand how to conduct a talent review and optimise the use of various talent development assessment tools available in the market.?

Inspiring Lecturers

Some modules stood out for their practical applications. She added, ?Certified HR Professional (Talent Management) was the most memorable module as I could apply the skills at my workplace.? Another module that stood out for her was ?Develop and Implement Recruitment and Selection Strategies?, where the facilitator, Mr Jagjit Gill, piqued the class's interest with his engaging examples. It also helped that the course faculty was highly experienced. April highlighted Mr John Read as another lecturer who left a great impression on her, ?He taught me four out of the ten modules. He was knowledgeable and was able to provide me with macro insights as well as link the different modules together to give us a holistic view.?

Not only did she pick up practical skills from the course, April also enjoyed the close camaraderie with her course mates. Overall, she found HCS to be a supportive organisation as it listened to feedback and tried its best to resolve issues brought up by trainees. To top off a satisfying learning experience, April received the CET Qualification Award of $1,000 from WDA, which helped her defray the cost of her investment in training.

April hopes to pursue a Masters in Human Resource Management next. ?Being in a dynamic classroom environment, exchanging ideas with my course mates and acquiring new skills ? these are all the things that make going back to school worthwhile,? she said.
