Octomom child neglect allegations investigated, police say - Nola.com

LA HABRA, Calif. -- Police say they have investigated allegations of child neglect at the former California home of Octomom Nadya Suleman and her 14 children.

La Habra police said Friday the claims were reported last month by a caregiver.

Suleman's manager, Gina Rodriguez, says the claims are not true and come from a woman who became obsessed with the children.

Police say many of the allegations were previously investigated by authorities and social services. They say they presented their findings to the Orange County district attorney's office to determine whether criminal conduct occurred.

Police declined to release additional details involving the investigation at the former home of the woman who gave birth to octuplets in 2009.

A message left with the district attorney's office was not immediately returned.

all dad, all day: Ode to a Childhood Home

I spent this past weekend at my childhood home in Yonkers, NY, showing my daughter where Daddy grew up and helping my parents pack up a few final things before the big move. After thirty eight years, our old three-story Victorian will house some other lucky family. As I walked around the near-empty rooms it struck me how much that house shaped my ideas about space, architecture and design. While I will miss countless things about it, here are some details that epitomize why it will always be a treasured place to me.

Large Doors: I never actually measured how tall the doors are but they loom large in my memory. Heavy, solid and substantial, they always made me feel secure and safe. I remember spending many an hour standing at the door, watching traffic go by and waiting for cousins to arrive. It was a treat to watch my daughter do the same thing.

High Coffered Ceilings: Nine-foot tall Christmas trees were not a problem in this house. The big tic-tac-toe boards on the ceilings mystified me as a kid but I know now that they helped me develop an appreciation for detail and trim work.

Antique Fixtures: I was surrounded by old stuff growing up, and not because my parents were collectors. Old wiring, plumbing and light fixtures were everywhere and fostered in me a love of finely crafted utilitarian antiques. I used to stealthily pull the lever on that black box at the top of the basement stairs, pretending I was a mad scientist entering his laboratory. I never told anyone because I knew my father would flip out. I finally told him about it this weekend. He flipped out.

Front Porch Flower Garden: I know it doesn't look like much now, but that little patch is pretty impressive in full bloom. This spot provided some good bonding time between me and my mother and introduced me to annuals, perennials and the importance of deadheading.

The Basement: This big dusty basement was the scene of all types of mischief and eventually became the practice place for a string of horrible bands in high school. The painted walls are remnants of when it was used as a set for an After-School Special, a little fact I still get mileage from today. After I learned a bit about carpentry I studied the rafters and posts to learn about load transfer and bridging.

The Renovated Kitchen: I know this kitchen that my dad and I renovated together will not win any design awards, and in fact it does not even match the rest of the house all that well. But it made my mom happy, and it was a huge step in the relationship between me and my father. The month or so it took us to get this done (and trust me, it was a bleak kitchen beforehand) caused my dad to see me in a new light and accept the fact that my carpentry skills had surpassed his own. We worked together as equals for the first time, and haven't looked back since.

Stained Glass: While this style of stained glass isn't my favorite, the fact that it can be found throughout the house definitely made an impression upon me. I realized stained glass wasn't just for our church down the street and that a little went a long way. I pledged that I would have stained glass in my own house, and I followed through on that pledge and made it happen.

The Old Phone: The ring of this phone is imprinted in my mind permanently. Learning to dial, calling girls, making prank calls--there is a lot of history in this heavy black machine. Believe it or not, though it is relegated to a dusty upstairs location, it is still connected and working. My parents plan to take it with them and hook it up in their new house. Nostalgia must run in the family.

Winnie the Pooh Wallpaper We moved into this house with my grandmother and uncle, who lived on the first floor. My family mostly lived on the second floor, with the third floor being me and my brothers' attic bedroom. It was a huge space with crazily angled ceilings and a view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. My dad must have hung this wallpaper back in 1974 when we first moved in. It is still there, cheerful as ever.

And finally, there is the front door lockset:

What a handsome piece of work. Thousands upon thousands of openings and closings, locking and unlockings, and it never has failed or needed repair. It will undoubtedly be there for as long as people want it to be, and I hope that is a long time. And what is a lockset without a key:

I have carried this key for over twenty-five years, even when I lived thousands of miles away. My key chain seems all wrong without it. Sigh.
Thanks for indulging my last look at a place that is as much a part of me as anywhere else on earth. Although I carry it with me in thousands of ways, I still miss it dearly.

Biden walks line between aggressive, domineering

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden mockingly smiled, wagged his finger and couldn't seem to stop interrupting Republican running mate Paul Ryan.

"With all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey," Biden said at one point, during an exchange on foreign policy.

Democrats cheered his sharp tone in the only vice presidential debate. Republicans panned the vice president as disrespectful to his younger opponent.

Biden's aggressive approach stood in stark contrast to President Barack Obama's listless ? and widely panned ? turn on the debate stage last week. Obama, to the dismay of his supporters, clenched his jaw, looked down at his notes and held back his criticism of Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

While Biden went after him, Ryan settled on a smirk for much of the debate ? his first on the national stage. He sipped water and cleared his throat through many of Biden's answers.

Voters watching at home were able to view Biden's smile and Ryan's smirk side-by-side, with most television networks broadcasting the debate on a split screen.

Early on in the wide-ranging debate on domestic and foreign policy issues, Biden leaned back his chair and gave a big grin, often audibly chuckling at Ryan. His laughter sparked a new Twitter handle called "LaughinJoeBiden."

But as the 90-minute debate pressed on, the vice president became increasingly agitated. He wagged his finger at moderator Martha Raddatz. His smile sometimes faded into a scowl.

And walking a fine line between being aggressive and domineering, Biden started interrupting.

"Not mathematically possible," he interjected during a discussion on the budget.

But Biden didn't seem to like it much when Raddatz turned the tables on him, cutting him off during an exchange on unemployment. He spread his hands incredulously, leaned back in his chair, his arms crossed. By the end, Biden had turned serious as he talked about his Catholic faith and other issues.

So how did it play? The early reviews appeared split by party.

Republican strategist Karen Hanretty wrote on Twitter that Ryan gave Biden the "let the crazy uncle speak his mind at Thanksgiving dinner" look.

But Massachusetts Democratic Sen. John Kerry, also taking to Twitter, thought Biden was so convincing that "by the end of this, Ryan may vote for Joe."

The conservative group "Campaign To Defeat Obama" quickly sought to raise money off Biden's "rude and arrogant" performance, sending a fundraising email to supporters asking for contributions.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina retorted: "When the other side is talking about eye rolls and smirks they are losing the debate."

South Korea delays ban on iPads and iPhones until Apple can appeal

Apple and Samsung have been recreating the Cold War through their own mutually assured destruction policy, and nowhere is that more apparent than their Pyrrhic victories in South Korea. For Apple, however, the pain will be just a little easier to bear. A Seoul court has confirmed that it's staying the ban on older iPads and iPhones until Apple can complete the appeals process; the Cupertino crew won't face the full penalty unless the appeals court upholds the verdict. Samsung hasn't yet asked for a similar pause on a ban covering some of its Android devices, though, which could lead to at least a momentarily lopsided situation in Samsung's home country. It's nonetheless a brief reprieve in a war that sadly won't end anytime soon.

Spanish researchers find the exact spot where Julius Caesar was stabbed

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Several ancient Roman texts describe the assassination of Julius Caesar in Rome, at the Curia of Pompey in 44 BC, which was the result of a plot among a group of senators to eliminate the General. This fact led to the formation of the second triumvirate and to the final outbreak of civil wars. Now, 2,056 years later, a team of researchers from the Spanish National Research Council has found the exact plot where the military man was stabbed.

A concrete structure of three meters wide and over two meters high, placed by order of Augustus (adoptive son and successor of Julius Caesar) to condemn the assassination of his father, has given the key to the scientists. This finding confirms that the General was stabbed right at the bottom of the Curia of Pompey while he was presiding, sitting on a chair, over a meeting of the Senate. Currently, the remains of this building are located in the archaeological area of Torre Argentina, right in the historic centre of the Roman capital.

Antonio Monterroso, CSIC researcher from the Institute of History of the Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (CCHS-CSIC), states: "We always knew that Julius Caesar was killed in the Curia of Pompey on March 15th 44 BC because the classical texts pass on so, but so far no material evidence of this fact, so often depicted in historicist painting and cinema, had been recovered."

Classical sources refer to the closure (years after the murder) of the Curia, a place that would become a chapel-memory. CSIC researcher explains: "We know for sure that the place where Julius Caesar presided over that session of the Senate, and where he fell stabbed, was closed with a rectangular structure organized under four walls delimiting a Roman concrete filling. However, we don't know if this closure also involved that the building ceased to be totally accessible."

Spaces of the assassination of Caesar

In Torre Argentina, in addition to the Curia of Pompey, researchers have started to study the remains of the Portico of the Hundred Columns (Hecatostylon). The aim is to identify what connecting links can be established between archaeology, art history, and cinema in these spaces of the death of Julius Caesar. Monterroso adds: "We also aim to better understand that sense of closure and dismal place described in classical texts."

The two buildings are part of the monumental complex (about 54.000 square meters) that Pompey the Great, one of the greatest military in the history of Rome, built in the capital to commemorate his military successes in the East around the year 55 BC.

Monterroso also states: "It is very attractive, in a civic and citizen sense, that thousands of people today take the bus and the tram right next to the place where Julius Caesar was stabbed 2056 years ago or even that they go to a theatre, since the main theatre of the capital is the Teatro Argentina, which is equally close."

The project, with duration of three years, relies on the approval and cooperation of the Sovraintendenza ai Beni Culturali of Rome City Council, on the financial support of the Plan Nacional 2008-2011 of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, and on the backing of the CSIC Spanish School of History and Archaeology in Rome.
